What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) also called Stein-Leventhal Syndrome is a common disorder related to hormonal imbalance in reproductive-age women. PCOS causes fluid-filled sacs (follicles or cysts) to develop on the ovaries. These cysts can lead to an increased androgen (ie. testosterone) hormone level. The cause of PCOS is still unknown but some possible factors include excess insulin production in the body, chronic inflammation, excess androgen levels, and hereditary.
What are the common symptoms of PCOS?
Symptoms of PCOS include irregular menstrual periods, infertility, pelvic pain, headache, unwanted hair growth, weight gain, acne, or male pattern baldness. These symptoms can be more severe with obesity. If experiencing two or more of these symptoms, it is recommended to talk with your doctor to determine if the symptoms could potentially be caused by PCOS. There is no cure for PCOS but the right combination of medications, diet, and exercise can help a woman manage the symptoms.
What are potential complications caused by PCOS?
Women with PCOS can have complications such as infertility, miscarriage or premature birth, sleep apnea, depression, abnormal uterine bleeding, or cancer of the uterine lining. Women with PCOS are at risk of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Early diagnosis and treatment could reduce these risks. Obesity can worsen complications.
What are some lifestyle modifications that you can implement to help manage PCOS?
Lifestyle changes such as weight loss can help with reducing the symptoms of PCOS. Reducing sugar and carbohydrate intake, being active, and maintaining a healthy weight are some examples of lifestyle changes.
